Sylvia Beach Society
A new literary community group for book-lovers who value sharing space, time, and meals with fellow readers.
The group was started by fans of the Sylvia Beach Hotel, an artist-curated literary hotel which operated in Newport, Oregon from March 1987 to January 2025. The hotel's namesake, Sylvia Beach, founded Shakespeare and Company — a bookstore and community hub where the written word was the calling, and literary connections were prioritized over business or profit. We aspire to continue her tradition.
The SBS has three main goals:
- Connect people (especially Oregonians and Oregon-lovers) around a love of literature, authors, reading and writing
- Celebrate, memorialize and create magical places (like the Sylvia Beach Hotel) that bring us closer to literature and cultivate deep connections.
- Provide a home for archival efforts to preserve the history of the Sylvia Beach Hotel
